Ed Joesting, developer of The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls, has been an outdoor enthusiast his entire life. Since he was very young, he has traveled the scenic North Shore on Highway 61 (the same highway that leads to The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls) from the Twin Cities to his family’s cabin at the end of the Gunflint Trail. For many years, he has seen the excitement and interest in the North Shore of Lake Superior grow as more and more people appreciate the pristine beauty and natural wonder of this spectacular area.

Therefore, Mr. Joesting has taken great care to develop this land and construct The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls in a way that protects and preserves the natural environment. He wanted this development to blend in with the environment and stay consistent with its surroundings. In addition, it was very important to him that the products and services of local craftspeople and artisans were utilized whenever possible. Below are some of the ways The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls is respectful to both the North Shore community and environment.

  • Long before the property was purchased by the developers of The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls, the previous owners cleared and bulldozed a large portion of the land. The property The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls lies on was once one of the most beautiful White Pine forests in the Midwest and was last logged in 1907.
  • After purchasing the land and building the model home, the developer’s first step toward restoring its natural beauty was to plant two towering White Pines on each side of our model home as a tribute to the forest that was once there. Flowers, ponds, trees, and other plants will also be added to the property as part of this restoration effort.
  • It may seem strange, but sewage collection and treatment is a serious issue on the North Shore. Gooseberry Village, Inc. worked with the Township, County, and State to create a state-of-the-art, environmentally safe sewage collection and treatment facility for The Lodge At Gooseberry Falls that also benefits Gooseberry Falls State Park and surrounding entities. Owners at The Lodge At Gooseberry Falls can be assured that their ownership includes a reliable and permanent collection and treatment facility.
  • Rather than using real cedar shakes, our roofing product gives the beautiful look and texture of cedar shakes without the hazard, maintenance, or wood usage. These shakes are actually made of, basically, ground up hoses, wood particles, and a bonding material. This material includes a 50 year warranty, once again, demonstrating our intent on stabilizing costs for the long term.
  • Surprise! The beautiful 16” diameter log siding is not solid wood! Despite its stunning appearance, these logs have a White Pine outer layer but use 80% less wood than other solid log siding products. For details, please visit www.dynamiclog.com.
  • The Lodge at Gooseberry Falls is a completely smoke-free environment, from construction through ownership.
  • Local musicians and artisans will demonstrate their skills and talents at Gooseberry Village.
  • Artwork throughout the homes is done by area artisans as well as nationally-recognized artists like Terry Redlin.
